Fenagh Visitor Centre

Located in the heart of the historical village of Fenagh in South Leitrim. It is a village that is steeped in history and has not one but two Abbeys and numerous significant archaeological sites in the vicinity of the village. Information, photographs, artifacts and maps can be viewed in the Centre depicting life in Fenagh down through the ages. A relatively recent addition to the Centre is a compilation of information on all the Fenagh graveyards which includes plot maps and locations and names and photographs of the individual graves.

Glenview Folk Museum

Located in Aghoo, Ballinamore. It has a private collection of more than 7,000 antique, historical and novel items ranging from pre-Famine Ireland to the recent past. You will find an impressive array of farm yard equipments, various forms of transport from horse drawn to vintage motorised vehicles, tools, household items and a wide range of coins, papers, military items and other intriguing memorabilia. Well worth a visit for the 'street scene' alone which has a number of reconstructed shops and a pub, all of them stocked with an assortments of products and equipped as they would have been in the past.

Kiltyclogher Heritage Centre

Houses an exhibition about 1916 Proclamation signatory Seán MacDiarmada. The exhibition contains an audio-visual facility and interpretive panels, providing visitors with information about Seán MacDiarmada and the history of the locality. The Heritage Centre itself is located on the former court house building in the centre of Kiltyclogher. The family cottage where MacDiarmada was born and raised is only a few kilometres outside the village in Corranmore. The cottage is maintained in its original condition as a National Monument by the OPW. The cottage is of considerable historical significance being the only family home of any of the signatories of the proclamation in existence.

Sliabh an Iarainn Visitor Centre

The Sliabh an Iarainn visitor centre has opened in it’s new premises beside Acres lake in Drumshanbo. The new centre hosts a wealth of information on tourism and heritage attractions throughout the county and adjoining areas. It includes audio visual displays and information on everything from the history of Sliabh an Iarainn to Industrial Heritage, Leitrim music, myths and folklore associated with Lough Allen, the Marble Arch Geopark in Fermanagh and so much more.

St. George's Heritage & Visitor Centre

is located in St. Mary's Close in Carrick-on-Shannon is where you can start to experience the rich and diverse heritage of Carrick-on-Shannon. Begin your historic tour of Carrick-on Shannon in the St. George's Heritage & Visitor Centre where you can view documents spanning 150 years relating to the Clements family, Lough Rynn, Earl of Leitrim and their tennants. While there, why not watch the excellent film on 'Leitrim Enduring and Enchanting' which is a study of Leitrim, it's Landscape, History and People.
A tour of St. George's Church is a must (it houses the second oldest Telford Organ in Ireland) and then onto Costello Chapel ( the smallest chapel in Ireland and reputedly the second smallest in the world!) which was built in the late 1800's by Edward Costello as a memorial and burial crypt for his beloved wife Mary Josephine.
Continue your journey by taking a short trip to the Attic Memorial at Carrick Workhouse where the significance of the Workhouse has been interpreted through a multimedia installation. Then onto the Famine Workhouse Garden of Remembrance and the Sensory Garden for reflection and relaxation.

Cavan and Leitrim Railway Museum 

The Cavan and Leitrim Railway Museum at Dromod Co. Leitrim operates a narrow gauge railway line along a section of the original Cavan and Leitrim Railway which opened in 1887 and closed in 1959. The museum offers fully guided tours of the railway and a fully immersive tour of the transport exhibits at the museum. 

The museum is completely volunteer operated, and all the track, locos and exhibits have all been restored from scratch. The railway has restored the original station building, water tower and engine shed at Dromod all dating from 1887. The railway museum has several steam locomotives, along with a host of Bord na Mona diesel locomotives. Those interested should check out the social media platforms as to what is operating. The museum is well worth a visit and very suitable for families and groups of all ages. 

The museum has also featured in productions such as Michael Portillo’s “Great Railway Journeys” by the BBC, RTE Nationwide and John Creedon’s Atlas of Ireland. The museum has been nominated for several national awards, including a finalist in the 2022 National Lottery Good Causes heritage category.
