Leitrim County Council in partnership with the SRC have been successful in securing €3.3m in funding from the Large Scale Sports Infrastructure Fund (LSSIF). The Dept of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport & Media published the announcement from Minster Catherine Martin TD and Minister for State Thomas Byrne TD on their website this morning with the Shannonside Regional Campus securing the €3.3m for an 8 lane 400m athletics track and internal grass pitch and the completion of a full size 4g pitch with floodlights and dressing rooms.
The provision of adequate sporting and recreational facilities in the county was identified as a key priority by Leitrim County Council who have been fully supportive of the SRC project. The provision of a full sized athletic track is part of a larger vision of the SRC team to build a regional sports and recreational campus located just outside Carrick-on-Shannon to serve the needs of the entire community in the upper Shannon region. This need is highlighted by the level of support in the funding application from regional and national sporting bodies, local & county sporting organisations and schools from across the county.
The SRC vison has received a tremendous boost today with the announcement of the LSSIF funding and in securing €15.3m under the PEACEPLUS programme. The SRC had already been successful in securing €1m from the Department of Rural & Community Development under the 2023 Community Recognition Fund and has funded groundworks and enabling works for the entire site. The LSSIF funding will contribute to the completion of a campus which will ensure that everyone – regardless of ability, age, or gender – can play, perform, and participate in their chosen sporting and recreational activity to the best of their ability.
Cathaoirleach Cllr Paddy O’Rourke has welcomed the funding, saying “The announcement of the LSSIF funding is supporting a much-needed facility in our County and the region and I want to thank Minister Martin and Minister of State Thomas Byrne and the Department for awarding this funding. I would like to acknowledge the work of the SRC, a volunteer committee who have worked tirelessly for over 10 years to bring this project to this point and have shown what can be done by the community, elected members and the local authority working together.”
