Dog Warden

Dog Warden Service

The Leitrim Dog Warden Service collects dogs that are straying, seizes dogs under legislation and takes in unwanted dogs. They are authorised to seize stray dogs and dogs which are not kept under effective control by their owners.

An owner who wishes to reclaim their dog must contact the dog warden. They must present their licence for that dog and pay a fee to cover the cost of impounding that dog.
The dog warden conducts checks to ensure that dog owners are complying with their legal responsibilities.

The warden may issue fines to dog owners who:

  • Do not have a dog licences for any dog in their possession.
  • Do not have their dogs under effective control
  • Allow their dog to attack people, livestock, other animals or other dogs.
  • Do not have their dog micro-chipped and registered.

Rehoming at Leitrim Dog Shelter

It is the policy of Leitrim County Council and Leitrim Animal Welfare to ensure that all suitable dogs are rehomed and that all dogs are socialised, behaviourally assessed, neutered, vaccinated and wormed before they are rehomed. Home checks are carried out on all dogs after rehoming to ensure their ongoing care and welfare.
