Safe Routes to Schools

Safe Routes to Schools

Safe Routes to School Programme is an initiative of the Department of Transport and supported by the Department of Education to encourage students in primary and post-primary schools to walk and cycle.

This programme is delivered by the Green-Schools – An Taisce in partnership with the National Transport Authority and Leitrim County Council’s Active Travel Department.

It has three aims:

  1. To encourage students to walk, cycle and scoot to school by the delivery of walking/scooting and cycling infrastructure on key identified access routes to schools.
  2. To provide “front of school” treatments which will emphasise the importance of the school going children accessing the school as congestion at school gates is often a major issue.
  3. To expand the amount of bike parking available at schools.

10 schools in Leitrim have applied for works under the Safe Routes to School Programme.

Currently 5 schools are at design or construction stage. The remaining schools will be progressed as funding becomes available by the National Transport Authority.
