Change of Ownership

Vehicles Registered before 1993

  • Notification of Transfer of Vehicle Ownership RF200 Form
  • Brown Registration Book (Logbook)
  • Where the logbook cannot be produced, a Statutory Declaration Form must be completed and returned to Leitrim Motor Tax Office.

Vehicles registered after 1993

Post-1993 registered vehicles are dealt with by Department of Transport, Shannon, Co. Clare. Leitrim Motor Tax Office can only register a change of ownership if the vehicle is being taxed.

  • Vehicle Registration Certificate (VRC) – Change of Ownership Section on the reverse completed by both the seller and the buyer.

This document must be forwarded by the seller to the Department of Transport, Shannon, Co. Clare and a new Registration Certificate will be issued to the new owner of the vehicle.

Change of Ownership where vehicle has never been taxed and no VRC exists

A letter must be sent by either the buyer or seller to Driver & Vehicle Computer Services Division, Department of Transport, Shannon, Co. Clare, V14P298 with the following information:

  • Registration number of the vehicle
  • Name and address of the new owner
  • Date of sale to the new owner
  • Chassis number
  • Company Registration Number (CRO) if the new owner is a company

The Department of Transport will then send an RF100 Tax Form to the new owner who can tax the vehicle. A VRC will only issue once the vehicle has been taxed for the first time. If the previous owner is unknown, a Statutory Declaration Form must be completed and sent to Department of Transport, Shannon.

Change of Ownership where new owner wishes to tax the vehicle

Change of Ownership where previous owner is deceased

  • Letter from executor of the deceased’s will with proof of executorship along with a copy of death certificate and portion of the will confirming who the vehicle has been willed to or Letter from a solicitor dealing with the will, indicating new owner’s right to the vehicle. 
  • Vehicle Registration Certificate (VRC)
  • Where the VRC cannot be produced, a Statutory Declaration Form must be completed and sent to the Department of Transport, Shannon, Co. Clare along with the 1 of the letters mentioned above.
