Fire Services Training & Recruitment
In addition to tackling domestic, industrial and wild fires, the role of the traditional firefighter and operational officer has evolved to include:
- Road Traffic Collision (RTC) extrications
- Casualty care
- Incidents involving hazardous materials
- Oil spills
- Fallen trees
- Rescue
- Flooding
- Other emergency and unusual incidents.
Training is actively promoted throughout the Fire Service. All appointed drivers in each station in the county have completed the Emergency Services Driver Standard (ESDS), accredited by the Road Safety Authority.
Other courses that are continually carried out for existing firefighters are:
- Breathing Apparatus Refresher
- Manual Handling
- Breathing Apparatus Instructor
- Breathing Apparatus Maintenance
- Chainsaw Operator
- First Responder
- Pump Operator
- Hydraulic Platform Operator
- Hazardous Materials
Each brigade trains for three nights every month for 2.25 hours duration where we carry out drills in addition to pre-fire and pre-emergency incident inspections and plans for some premises in the county.
How can I join the Fire Service?
When vacancies become available, they are advertised in local newspapers, and on the jobs section of this website, which will provide details on the vacancy and how to apply.
Successful recruits will then go through a probation period where they attend a three week firefighter initial recruits' training course, a two week breathing apparatus wearer's course, and a one week compartment fire behavior training (CFBT) course.
