What is a DZ?

A Decarbonising Zone is a spatial area identified as a test bed of what is possible for decarbonisation and climate action at a local and community level to help support and realise national climate ambition.

As part of ‘place-based focus’ the delivery of climate actions offers opportunities beyond emission reductions, creating places that are sustainable, resilient and inclusive where people enjoy living, working and doing business.

Carrick-on-Shannon DZ

An area around Carrick-on-Shannon has been selected as the DZ for County Leitrim. It offers Leitrim County Council the opportunity to maximise our impact across the town and wider county through the delivery of decarbonisation actions developed from its unique position as an inland tourism hub, with an abundance of natural assets and an interested community, local businesses and residents.

Vision

Carrick-on-Shannon Decarbonising Zone will be a focus for sustainable place-based climate action opportunities including mitigation, adaptation and biodiversity enhancement, to deliver on the National Climate Objective at local and community levels to provide a test bed of learning and understanding on the scale of the challenge, that can be applied elsewhere in County Leitrim.

The Decarbonising Zone classification offers an opportunity for all stakeholders in Carrick-on-Shannon to lead by example and build on existing assets and services to implement innovative decarbonisation and sustainability initiatives including

Next Steps

It is vital to build and sustain partnerships amongst all stakeholders to cultivate a community driven approach, so that Carrick-on-Shannon can become a leader on climate action. Therefore Leitrim County Council will engage with all stakeholders to coordinate the implementation of actions and realisation of opportunities to deliver on the Vision for Carrick-on-Shannon, over the life of the Climate Action Plan.
