Period Poverty

This period dignity support programme was rolled out initially in Leitrim in 2022.  Funded by the Department of Health, it supports the provision of period products in some public buildings and facilities managed by local authorities, as well as supporting family resource centres and charities working with people experiencing homelessness, addiction and/or consistent poverty to provide period products to those in need.

There are currently 14 participating locations around Leitrim including the libraries and family resource centres.  They all display posters on each dispenser and this image is also being shared across all social media platforms.

There has been a very positive response to this programme since its inception in 2022:

“The highlight of the project is that people are so grateful, with some of the people we have delivered these products to they are unable to afford to buy these products which means their daughters are missing school, because of this project the girls no longer have to miss school, and this in turn lifts a huge burden off their parents”.
