The Community Recognition Fund
Five communities in Leitrim secure almost €500,000 through Phase 2 of the Community Recognition Fund.
In a funding announcement made on Monday 24th February by the Minister for Rural and Community Development, Dara Calleary TD, five projects in Leitrim received funding of €496,000 as part of a wider national funding announcement of €14 million to deliver 163 community projects across the country. The Leitrim projects are located in Dromahair, Mohill, Carrigallen, Carrick on Shannon and also include a Community Bus which will deliver county wide benefits.
The Community Recognition Fund is administered at a county level by the local authorities. The funding is specifically targeted at projects that are located in cities, towns and villages that are hosting the Beneficiaries of Temporary Protection and/or International Protection Applicants. Applications for funding can be submitted by Local Authorities across three phases.
Leitrim County Council has previously been successful in securing over €1.066 m in funding under phase 1. Today’s announcement refers to funding under phase two. This major investment in Leitrim will support the development of community facilities, recreational trails and activities, sports facilities and transport
The successful projects in Leitrim under Phase two are as follows:
- Dromahair Garda Station Refurbishment to a Community Hub and Men’s Shed – €176,590
- County Leitrim Community Bus - €73,015
- Mohill Lough Rynn Dragons Boating Club- new shed and equipment- €84,000
- Carrick on Shannon Aura Leisure Centre upgrade works - €77,400
- Carrigallen Town Walkway- €85,054
Speaking today, Minister Calleary TD said:“In keeping with the Government’s renewed commitment to ensuring local communities are supported to make their town, village and parish thriving places to live, work and raise a family, I am very happy to be making this announcement which will see 163 very worthwhile projects receiving funding to deliver key community infrastructure across the country. Through this continued investment under the Community Recognition Fund, to support towns and villages who have welcomed new arrivals, these communities will now enjoy upgrades to their sports facilities, community centres, recreational trails, community parks and play spaces”.
Cathaoirleach of Leitrim County Council, Cllr Paddy O’Rourke welcomed the funding by saying: “I would like to thank the Minister and the Dept of Rural & Community Development for the roll out of the Community Recognition Fund which recognises a need to support communities in their efforts to welcome and support new arrivals from other countries. Securing this funding is a testament to the hard-working vibrant community organisations across Leitrim who are continuously working to improve their facilities to make them better for all who use them. This phase of the funding from the Community Recognition Fund will support and further develop existing facilities in Dromahair, Mohill, Carrick on Shannon, Carrigallen and throughout County Leitrim.
Mr. Joseph Gilhooly, Chief Executive of Leitrim County Council, also welcomed the funding by saying: “I am delighted to welcome the Community Recognition Funding announced today for County Leitrim by Minister Calleary. Over the last number of years, Leitrim has opened its doors to welcome many new arrivals, and now with the allocation of this funding, communities have the opportunity to develop and enhance facilities that will support the current and future needs of County Leitrim. The three phases of the Community Recognition Fund 2024 are being administered by Leitrim County Council who have engaged extensively and collaborated with communities across Leitrim to identify priorities and roll out beneficial projects for the county. This funding recognises the shared commitment of Leitrim County Council and the communities of Leitrim to building a vibrant, inclusive, and supportive environment for all who call Leitrim home."
