About Us

Leitrim County Council was established under the Local Government (Ireland) Act, 1898, with the first meeting held on April 22nd, 1899. It is one of 31 Local Authorities County Councils in the Republic of Ireland and is responsible for the administrative area of County Leitrim, delivering a wide range of services necessary to the physical, economic, social and cultural life of the county.

In accordance with the Irish system of local government, which encompasses both democratic representation and public administration, Leitrim County Council as a local authority performs both a representational and operational role.

Operational Role: The County Council makes its decisions by Resolution at its bi-monthly meetings. The Chief Executive and his staff perform the operational role of Leitrim County Council. They are responsible for the day-to-day administration of the Council. The functions carried out by the Chief Executive are called "executive functions".
